24th August 2024- Championship, Watford 2 Derby County 1

WFC.Net Goal Commentary: 1  2

Sky: Moussa Sissoko scored for the first time on his return to Watford as Derby were beaten 2-1 at Vicarage Road.

BBC: The Hornets trailed inside two minutes to a fine low Ebou Adams strike. But Vakoun Bayo’s outrageous scissor kick drew the hosts level, before a fiery end to the first half saw Rams assistant boss Richie Barker sent off. And captain Sissoko’s close-range effort ensured a fourth win in all competitions for Tom Cleverley’s free-scoring side.

BHappy: There was a reason that every post-match review on Vicarage Road, in the car home, in the pub, would have featured the phrase “we wouldn’t have won that last season”.  That reason for this, of course, that we wouldn’t have won that last season.  We wouldn’t have looked as composed, as firmly insistent against that packed backline at 1-0… it took a special goal but didn’t demand one, we would have kept knocking anyway.  At 1-1, maybe we’d have  let Derby back into the game.  We’ll take routine-looking wins on this basis all season long.

Fran’s Watford Blog: It was another pleasing win, although one that the Hornets had to work hard for as Derby were solid in defence. At times Watford looked brilliant, the passing was accurate and there was always an eye for goal. Pollock won man of the match at the stadium for another solid outing. But Sissoko won the fan vote for a performance that included the winning goal and some brilliant defensive play. A special mention must go to Vakoun Bayo, who has never hidden while he struggled to score. His strike on Saturday was a thing of beauty and he could have had a couple more. I was just hoping that the ball would bounce off him to break his duck this season, so to score that gorgeous goal was a dream come true. He thoroughly deserved the ovation when he was substituted. The atmosphere at Vicarage Road is bouncing again. The fans are positive, and the football is fun. It has been a while since we have been able to say that, so long may it continue.

BBC Sport: Watford, who only had one shot in the first half, improved after the break with Troost-Ekong and Hernandez both having chances before the latter found space down the left swing, cut back and curled over a delightful cross for Fletcher, who joined the club on a free transfer after leaving Middlesbrough this summer, to poke home.

BHappy: I’d resigned myself to penalties, I suspect I wasn’t the only one… gazing across the pitch and wondering who might be up for a spot kick when suddenly one of those breaks connected, like a misfiring engine that suddenly, unexpectedly, clicks into gear.  Rose fed Cucho on the left, the Colombian cut a tremendous cross through to the far post where Fletcher was hurtling in to tuck the ball home.  The vigour of the celebration testified to the popularity of the goalscorer in the dressing room – whatever his future involvement there are worse ways to debut than scoring a late winner against Palace.

The Hornets shot themselves in the foot inside two minutes when Abdoulaye Doucoure caught Manuel Lanzini in the box, and Mark Noble stepped up to slot home from the spot on his 350th Premier League appearance.

But Watford responded to level with a well-worked Andre Gray goal, with the forward drilling home a right-foot shot from Will Hughes’ pass. However, the Hornets were punished for their wastefulness in front of goal with just three of their 23 shots finding the target.

Only Hughes will know how he did not improve that ratio when, in the 55th minute, he met Gray’s fizzed centre at the far post after the striker had skipped around Lukasz Fabianski. It was a sitter but, perhaps seeing the ball late, Hughes turned it wide from a matter of inches.

We’ve played indisputably the best football we’ve played this season, and we’ve lost by two clear goals.  For the first time since promotion, we’re in trouble.

The post-match mood was sombre.  As last week against Everton, we faced a team that we could and should have beaten, but we were undone by our lack of clinical finishing and the generosity of our defence.  Dawson is getting a lot of criticism, but he was left exposed by Femenía who certainly adds to our attacking options but is so often missing in defence.  I was encouraged by a lot of the forward play but, too often, the players wait for the perfect sight of goal and end up losing out to a defender.

BBC SportLeague One side Notts County caused an upset by knocking Watford out of the Carling Cup despite the Championship side largely dictating the play.

Bhappy report: So much a game of two halves that using more than a pair of thunks – good thunk, bad thunk – seems a little wasteful. Unless you count this as a thunk in its own right, of course. Ah.

Two forced changes from Saturday’s fabulous win at Leicester saw a first start of the season for Ashley Young, while Jay DeMerit, the recent signing from Northwood and my American girlfriend’s new favourite player, started at centre half. In fact, DeMerit’s unfussy and calm display alongside Coxy was a relative highlight of a mind-numbingly boring first half, while Young failed to shine until the closing stages of the game when he moved to the right-hand side.

I’ll spare you the ramblings of a match report, or anything as in-depth as that, because (to be honest) I don’t really remember much that’s specific. Plus I spent most of the night wondering why I felt like I had motion sickness when the closest I’d been to any sort of water in the past two days was about five miles (up). “Must be the air,” as my Mum said afterwards…bless!

24th August 2002- New Division One, Portsmouth 3 Watford 0

BBC Sport: Watford’s day was summed up in a bizarre incident in the 79th minute, when Allan Neilsen was booked for unsporting behaviour and received a second yellow for foul and abusive language, resulting in his dismissal.

In truth, the off-pitch politics of the First Division has proved to be rather more fascinating than much of the football, so far. It’s been hard to focus, somehow…and hard to regard the early season jostling as particularly important when it’s patently obvious that several of those involved might be bust by Christmas. Bizarrely, and yet tellingly, I have absolutely no idea what league positions some clubs – Walsall, Rotherham, Sheffield United, for example – currently occupy. And yet I know rather more about their latest accounts….

In the end, although Watford had plenty of possession, they never looked like doing anything and Pompey deserved their win. Once we had gone a goal down it seemed that the players didn’t know what to do. Sure, Pompey are a very good side, but for my liking the players surrendered all too easily in the five minutes either side of half time. It almost looked like we came for a 0-0 and hoped to get one in the last five minutes.
