Brentford vs Watford: Andre Gray hits winner as Bees self-destruct in error strewn clash

RELIVE – Brentford vs Watford: Pair of Brentford errors hand Watford pre-season victory

Frans Watford Blog: It had been a typical pre-season game.  A run out that gave few clues to what we can expect for the rest of the season, but it was an enjoyable enough afternoon.  Bizarrely, the atmosphere in the away end was livelier than I am used to at pre-season games, although the chanting was dominated by anti-Luton songs, being delivered by kids who, if I am any judge of ages, are too young ever to have seen Watford play them up the road.

30th September 2014-Championship, Watford 2 Brentford 1

Oscar Garcia resigned for health reasons two days before this game. Billy McKinlay took over as the Hornets Head Coach.

BBC image report: A superb strike from Matej Vydra gave Billy McKinlay a victory over Brentford in his first game as Watford boss.McKinlay was only named Hornets head coach on Monday, following Oscar Garcia’s decision to step down for health reasons.

BHappy image report: another chance for Odion Ighalo to show us what he could do. Word from Granada was that he was hugely popular despite not having the best goalscoring ratio, and it’s easy to see why on both counts.

26th July 2011- Friendly, Brentford 0 Watford 0

Gavin Mahon made his final Watford appearance in this game over three and a half years after his penultimate one.  His last competitive appearance was on 1st Dec 2007 in the 2-1 home defeat by Burnley.  He then joined QPR, initially on loan, and played over 50 times for them.  They released him at the end of the 2010/11 season.  As he was without a club Sean Dyche allowed Mahon to train with us during the 2011/12 pre-season and he came on during this game as a second half substitute.  He eventually signed for Notts County.

Watford fielded former captain Gavin Mahon and a trialist left back during tonight’s 0-0 draw at Brentford.

24th January 1998- New Division Two, Brentford 1 Watford 2

Chamberlain wins the ‘man of the match’ award for two remarkable stops, both requiring one-handed saves low down at his right hand post. He actually brought one of them on himself with a poor clearance that was returned by a Brentford striker but the other, an instinctive reaction to a deflected shot, was extraordinary. But even with the Watford keeper’s heroics and even with Mooney booting another effort from the goalline, Brentford should’ve scored – two great opportunities saw strikers shoot across the face of goal when it seemed far easier to hit the back of the net.

BSAD imageBSAD report: Y’know, there was a time not so very long ago when writing one of these reports involved little more that topping and tailing the handful of noteworthy incidents with a few bits of my usual waffle. It seems that those days are gone – you could write a book about this game, such was the richness and potency of football on offer.
