Watford signed off their pre-season campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Charlton Athletic at Vicarage Road this afternoon. An early goal from Danny Graham, with his fourth of the summer making him the top scorer of the warm-up matches, was to prove enough as the Hornets encouragingly completed back-to-back wins with successive clean sheets.

Watford eased their relegation fears with a win against a Charlton side who slipped further towards the drop.

Don Cowie had given the Hornets a 17th-minute lead before on-loan striker Tresor Kandol’s well-taken brace turned the game in Charlton’s favour before half-time. Watford drew level through Grzegorz Rasiak before Priskin struck seven minutes from time to secure a fourth win in five games for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Both clubs have new managers since they met in August with higher ambitions. Two seasons ago they played a goalless draw here in the Premier League in front of 27,000. Under the sinking circumstances it says much for Charlton and their fans that they have not fallen below 20,000.

New passing game, new passing formation. Fine. But the real benefit thus far has been the protection afforded the defence. It speaks volumes that on a day when John Eustace was below par, Charlton rarely got more than a sniff – having Eustace and Williamson, fantastic today, as two sitting midfielders makes us a whole lot more secure. It does ask a lot of the four attacking players though (4-3-3 my arse). Speaking of whom….

The first game since Al Bangura won his appeal to be allowed to remain in the UK.

After 19 games record signing Nathan Ellington finally scored his first goal for the Hornets.

Nathan Ellington scored his first goal for the club since his summer move when he coolly steered home from 12 yards.

At the end of a busy week Aidy Boothroyd could reflect that more by luck than design his team had squeezed back into the automatic promotion places on goal difference but the Watford manager cannot wait for the month to end so he can get back to the business of priming his squad for the run-in.

Well that was quite good fun really. Wouldn’t have been fun in the Premiership… we’d have been two down and game over at half time.

I don’t know if it is football in general – the continuing failure of the National team, the increasingly hard to stomach Sky TV hype and equally nauseating commentary, Andy Gray (both of them), the wonky kick off times etc. – but (whisper it) I think I am losing interest a bit.
