7th November 2000- New Division One, Watford 1 Sheffield Wednesday 3

Fast-improving Sheffield Wednesday brought Watford’s 15-game unbeaten start to the season to a grinding halt with a shock win at Vicarage Road.

It had to happen sooner or later, obviously.

BSAD imageIf the season’s only previous goalless draw against Barnsley had more merits than the scoreline suggested, then this was your authentic “move along, there’s nothing to see here” stalemate. The least entertaining spectacle of the campaign so far by, ooh, that much and a flashback to what life in the First Division frequently used to be like for the Hornets prior to Graham Taylor’s return.

21st October 1997- New Division Two, Watford 2 Fulham 0

BSAD imageBSAD report:And so Mohammed Al Fayed’s weary band of third-rate commentators comes to town. It’s not too difficult to understand the Fulham fans’ anger at recent events – if seeing Mickey Adams booted out wasn’t bad enough, finding that he’s been replaced by Ray Flamin’ Wilkins must feel like a severe boot in the privates. For the rest of the footballing world, however, the prospect of having to spend slightly less time in the company of Kevin Flippin’ Keegan’s shrill, earnest enthusiasm (once, just once, I’d love to hear him describe a player as ‘crap’) and Wilkins’ dreary witticisms is something of an early Christmas present. One can only hope that there’s a job for Mark Bloody Lawrenson too…

21st December 1996- New Division Two, Watford 0 Gillingham 0

I can’t explain why I’m still going to Watford matches. I wish I could rationalise it – it might make all the frustration a little easier to deal with. But there’s no reason to be at Vicarage Road, sitting week after week watching an average side grind out yet another draw and slide a little further away from the all-important automatic promotion places. It’s just blind loyalty, nothing more. I’m there because I’ve always been there. The club would do well to capitalise on that loyalty before it turns into utter indifference.
