Manager Roy Hodgson said Crystal Palace’s problems are far from over despite two late goals in a dramatic win over Watford moving them out of the Premier League relegation zone for the first time this season.

Crystal Palace moved off the bottom and out of the Premier League relegation zone with a sensational late rally to see off 10-man Watford 2-1 at Selhurst Park.

Now Crystal Palace have hope. How could they not when after spluttering in arrears for almost the entire match, blunted and diminished by an imposing Watford team, they still plucked an improbable win from the jaws of defeat?

The game started brilliantly for the Hornets as Richarlison crossed for Janmaat to head home to give the visitors the lead in the third minute. The Dutchman threatened the Palace goal again soon after, but his cross was too close to Speroni. Watford looked sure to score their second on 10 minutes after Carrillo found Richarlison, but the shot was headed off the line by Tomkins.

The phrase ‘a game of two halves’ could not be more appropriate for what followed. Palace began to pin Watford back straight from the restart.

Crystal Palace earned their third successive victory thanks to an own goal by Watford’s Troy Deeney at Selhurst Park.

A Troy Deeney own goal earned Crystal Palace a crucial 1-0 win over Watford to pull them four points clear of the bottom three.

If ever there was a game which epitomised Sam Allardyce’s managerial career, this was it. When the pressure was on and only a result, not a performance, was needed, his players delivered.

It’s an extraordinarily bad game. Creatively awful. Sorry if you were hoping for more dramatic build up, more suspense than that. Too bad. I sat through it, if you were hoping for drama then you clearly didn’t bloody do so and you’ll get what you’re given and like it.

Crystal Palace will play Manchester United in a repeat of the 1990 FA Cup final after beating Watford 2-1 in Sunday’s semi-final at Wembley. Yannick Bolasie headed Palace into an early lead but Troy Deeney levelled the match on 55 minutes. But with the game on a knife edge, Connor Wickham popped up with the winning goal on 61 minutes to send Palace to their first FA Cup showpiece since losing out to United in a replay following a memorable 3-3 draw.

Watford had knocked out holders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in the quarter-finals yet this was one hurdle too many for Quique Sanchez Flores’ side.

Watford scored from one of only two shots on target during the game and, after a sequence of just three wins from 17 league matches, this was a display that will do little for manager Quique Sanchez Flores’s chances of keeping his job.

Yet, for all that Adlène Guedioura smeared a stoppage-time volley just wide and Joel Ward almost inadvertently converted Allan Nyom’s dangerous centre, Flores’s team were rather disjointed throughout and handicapped further by a knee injury sustained by Étienne Capoue which could yet prove serious.

Sometimes these reports are enjoyable to write. Winning helps, of course, but it’s not a perfect correlation… there are interesting defeats too, defeats that don’t quite feel like being slapped in the face. This isn’t one of those times. This is the sort of occasion when you kinda suspect that everyone wants to forget it as much as you do.

One of the most important football matches of your entire life is about to end. You spend its last ten minutes trying to work out how best to get back to civilisation. You wish it away and it meekly obeys.

Generally I try to take positives from games, but it is hard on an afternoon like this. I can take a defeat if we have given our all and were beaten by a better team, but I came away from Wembley thinking that, given the talent in our squad, we should have done better. If you had told me in August that we would retain our status in the Premier League and reach the FA Cup semi-final, I would have been thrilled. But that defeat will hurt for some time.

BBC: Troy Deeney scored twice to steer Watford to victory and extend Crystal Palace’s run without a league win to nine games. The captain put Watford into an early lead from the penalty spot, but Emmanuel Adebayor’s first goal for Palace drew the Eagles level. Watford retook the lead with seven minutes left when Deeney drove home Ben Watson’s cross. And Palace ended with 10 men after Pape Souare was shown a red card late on.

Fran’s Watford Blog: When the final whistle went, Pete said, “We’re safe,” and, while that is not mathematically certain, the teams in 17^th and 18^th are 12 points behind us with a considerably worse goal difference, so it is hard to see them catching us. Time to concentrate on the cup!!

BBC: Crystal Palace moved up to sixth in the Premier League as Yohan Cabaye’s penalty settled a low-key clash against Watford at Vicarage Road.

Sky: It took until the 71st minute for the deadlock to be broken, when Cabaye rifled home from the spot after substitute Wilfried Zaha was brought down just inside the penalty area by Allan Nyom.

ESPN: Despite having plenty of possession, it was not until after the interval that Watford came close to getting on the scoresheet when, after Abdi had been tripped by Joe Ledley, Jose Jurado stepped up and hit a 25-yard free-kick that came back off the crossbar with Wayne Hennessey beaten.

BHappy: We allow the atmosphere to fuel five minutes’ worth of brash and eager and urgent attacking football, before Palace spoil things by failing to show any signs of panic. Bastards. As the game settles down, it becomes apparent both that we aren’t out of our depth against a team that might well finish in the top half and, at the same time, that there isn’t an awful lot we’re doing that’s scaring them, especially since they’re the away side. It’s an even contest, but one side is more even than the other.

Fran’s Watford Blog: We haven’t faced Palace since the play-off final two years ago and there is a lingering resentment that we were mugged that day. While Palace’s spoiling tactics made for an unpleasant game, too many of our players didn’t turn up and we didn’t really deserve anything out of the match. In all honesty, I am delighted that we had a couple more seasons in the Championship and were promoted at a time when we were better prepared for survival in the top division.
