BSAD imageBSAD report: The second half picked up where the first half finished, with the Hornets in the ascendancy. Devlin might have had a penalty having been brought down by Boertien, but better was to follow on fifty-two minutes. Helguson flicked on a long ball from stand in skipper Neal Ardley, who also defied his critics with a determined display at right back. Gavin Mahon picked up the flick and bulldozed his way into the box, where he applied a neat finish to give the Hornets the lead. Get in there. Yes, Yes and YES!

17th September 2003- New Division One, Derby County 3 Watford 2

Junior, who scored Derby’s winner, would join Watford in 2006 but legal issues with his work permit prevented him from ever playing a game for us.

21st April 2003- Championship, Watford 2 Derby County 0

From an unseasonably cold Valley Parade to a sunny Vicarage Road in a matter of forty-eight hours, the other side of the end of season coin was very much in evidence before the kick-off. On paper, the fixture was just as meaningless as the encounter at Bradford. However, Watford’s end of season run-in does have a little more meaning than a glance at the league table would have you believe. Our current position doesn’t do justice to the effort this team has put into the season and three home games in the last four allow Watford the chance to rectify that. Furthermore, there are the ghosts of Villa Park that need exorcising. A good Watford win would do much to restore the feel-good factor that’s prevailed for much of this campaign.

7th December 2002- New Division One, Derby County 3 Watford 0

BBC Sport: Lee Morris, Chris Riggott and Deon Burton scored as Derby brushed aside Watford at Pride Park.

BSAD report: Derby’s attacks, when they came, were based largely on the pace of their two wide strikers. Morris, however, was largely subdued by Doyley in the first forty-five who covered his man reasonably well. Christie, on the other side, was most effective in drawing a couple of significant bookings. No Spotters’ Badges for guessing the culprits… Robinson first, for an unnecessary and costly hack, and The Jamie Hand Booking second, for a tug as the England U21 striker threatened to escape. Both of our aggressors’ contributions were restricted from then on.

BSAD image One league, twenty teams, enough hot air to keep Richard Branson in world record attempts for the rest of his life.

So what have we discovered on our year-long fact-finding mission? What will we tell our Nationwide chums upon our return? That it’s quite impossible for clubs of our size to survive in the top flight? That there’s a gap so great that it can never be bridged without the help of either massive resources or Kevin Phillips? That there’s no point in even trying?

Not really. As long as the Premiership remains at its current size, it will contain enough guff ‘n’ nonsense for a club of our stature – and, more importantly, our strength – to scrap towards the forty point mark.

BSAD: During the summer, a Watford-supporting friend and I met a Charlton fan at a football tournament. Mindful of the rollercoaster of excitement, the season of bloodying Premiership noses that was to come we asked how he’d enjoyed the previous term. “Awful” he told us, “I hated every minute of it. Turning up knowing we were going to lose, realising that the game was over as soon as we went behind, that all of these narrow defeats weren’t just bad luck, that we’d have lost them all by one goal if we’d played them a hundred times”. We were incredulous at his lack of bravado. Then. But his words came back to me on the long walk back to the car from Pride Park, and not for the first time. Cold, wet, thoroughly depressed, the funeral procession pace dictated by my brother’s crutches was very appropriate. Just how much more misery does this season have to offer?
