13th September 1997- New Division Two, Watford 2 Chesterfield 1

BSAD imageBSAD report: Perhaps it’s necessary to point out that any criticism of Watford players or management contained in this match report is mere tedious quibbling which is best ignored. Any Watford fan who hasn’t spent the weekend gazing contentedly at page 325 of CEEFAX or a Sunday paper casually left open at the league tables is clearly the kind of joyless urchin that helps to keep Ocean f***ing Colour b****** Scene out of the dole office.

BSAD imageBSAD report:This was a match of many good (and a few excellent) individual performances, not a game that offered vital insights into our future – chaotic but fun, essentially. If we play like that all season, most of our fans will have been reduced to dribbling lunatics by May – but, with so many new players and a ‘new’ manager, it’s only to be expected that we’ll take some time bringing everything together into a cohesive whole.

BSAD image The end of a best-forgotten era. If the announcement of the takeover of Watford Football Club before the game brings new hope to supporters, then the match itself was a stark reminder of how much work remains to be done. Elton’s return, along with the presentation of the ‘player of the season’ award to Kevin Miller just seconds before kick-off and the obvious need for three points, gave the pre-match atmosphere a distinctly surreal air of expectation and celebration. By the end of the first half, it was flat as a steam-rollered hedgehog – such are the sedative powers of our brand of football…

At last we get to see a genuine centre forward in a yellow shirt. It might only be Paul Wilkinson, older and wiser but still always offside, and there’s a temptation to feel disappointed about that, but he played a role in this victory, both as a target man and a decoy for the brilliant Phillips. In truth, it’s just a wonderful relief to know that there will be someone hanging around the six-yard box when we go forward. As long as it doesn’t exclude other possible signings, I’d happily see Wilko return to the Vic on a permanent basis. It took him less than a minute to get caught offside and have a go at the linesman – welcome back, mate!
