If we can be so far off our game against a confident side and still create a hatful of chances, we’re doing something right.

13th May 2007- Premier League, Watford 1 Newcastle United 1

This was an emotional day for those in Watford’s goal. Ben Foster played the final game of his two season loan spell from Manchester United. He was substituted in the 90th minute for Alec Chamberlain who came on for the last game in a career that spanned 25 years and 678 appearances, over 250 of them for Watford. The one minute cameo made Alec the second oldest Premier League player ever at 42 years 327 days only beaten by Manchester City’s John Rudge who was 43 when he played for them in 1995. Alec continued to work at Vicarage Road as a goalkeeper coach until 2017. Ben Foster, of course, would return to Watford in 2018.

21st April 2007- Premier League, Watford 1 Manchester City 1

Watford became the first team to be relegated from the Premiership this season after drawing with Manchester City at Vicarage Road.

Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd admitted his team ‘did not have enough’ after today’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City meant they were relegated to the Championship.

Your one-word match report is:fitting.

31st March 2007- Premier League, Watford 0 Chelsea 1

For so long it seemed as though Chelsea’s challenge would founder at Vicarage Road after Watford battled manfully – and Kalou’s winner was a painful blow for the home team.

“You’re getting sacked in the summer,” chanted the home supporters as Mourinho paced up and down the touchline, unable to contain his frustration as Chelsea toiled against a spirited Watford side. Mourinho lost control of his emotions at one point in the second half; arguing with Boothroyd only to embrace the Watford manager later and share a joke. Abramovich appears in no mood to do likewise, even if he did manage to smile when Salomon Kalou struck.

The result leaves Watford needing a miracle, although Boothroyd has not thrown in the towel. ‘The other results haven’t helped us, but we shall try to finish the season as strongly as we can and see where it takes us,’ he said.

3rd March 2007- Premier League, Watford 2 Charlton Athletic 2

Darren Ambrose scored a dramatic late equaliser as Charlton recovered from two goals down to rescue a point. The Hornets led 2-0 at half-time after Hameur Bouazza finished from close range and Damien Francis powered in Tommy Smith’s cross.

From the neutral’s point of view a point apiece was an unsatisfactory outcome for these struggling teams. Both surely needed a victory to entertain serious hopes of avoiding the drop. Alan Pardew and Adrian Boothroyd, however, saw plenty of positives to come out of an absorbing and entertaining match.

In the first half Watford finally seemed ready to take flight, but again the fog descended. The clouds have rarely lifted from this corner of Hertfordshire of late, but the good news is that clouds in this division are lined not with silver but gold, and lots of it. Boothroyd will surely aim for the skies again next season and he should at least be able to afford some expensive ammunition.

Your one word match report is: positive.
