19th January 2013- Championship, Watford 4 Huddersfield Town 0

Matej Vydra scored twice and won a penalty as Watford cemented their place in the top six and left Huddersfield without a league win in 12.

Cristian Battocchio rounded off a comfortable win with five minutes left, flicking the ball into the far corner after a fantastic passing move.

The first surprise was that the game was on at all.  Yesterday’s rather testing weather conditions had made that seem highly unlikely (even if it’s difficult to judge quite how the rest of the world is getting on from the arctic isolation of a cul-de-sac, media updates or otherwise). So… big respect to those who answered the call and turned up with shovels early in the morning, and to all others involved in getting the game played.

29th September 2012- Championship, Huddersfield Town 2 Watford 3

BBC Sport: Huddersfield missed the chance to go top of the Championship as Troy Deeney’s late penalty earned Watford a dramatic win. Oliver Norwood’s free-kick gave the hosts the lead, but Simon Grayson’s men were hit by a second-half fightback. Udinese loanee Fernando Forestieri netted his first Watford goal and Fitz Hall put the Hornets ahead. After substitute Alan Lee levelled for Huddersfield, Deeney then kept his cool to win it with three minutes left.

BHappy: To this end, it was heartening to see Troy Deeney pick up where he left off last weekend. And then some. A simply colossal performance from the striker, describing it as “Mooneyesque” would scarcely do it justice. When the ball needed holding up, he held it; when it needed laying off he did so, and when no other option presented itself he turned on his marker and ran at Huddersfield, frequently scattering or dragging markers in his wake.

12th August 2000- New Division One, Huddersfield Town 1 Watford 2

BBC Sport: Tommy Smith helped Watford to their first away victory since August 1999 at Huddersfield Town – and three precious points in the quest to make an immediate return to the Premiership.

Sunday Telegraph, 13 Aug 2000

BSAD: So there’s no real feeling of excitement until the players emerge, the two goalkeepers followed by the rest of the squad and greeted by a huge ovation from an eager travelling support. Things are still relaxed, mind you – the McAlpine is far removed from the hype and general insanity of the Premiership, particularly in the way that the PA announcer rattles through the two teams in a dreary monotone, barely pausing to allow the two sets of fans to cheer their heroes. We provide our own pre-match build-up instead, rattling the roof with a rendition of “Elton John’s Taylor-made Army” that begins rustily, gathers pace and ends at full pelt.

No excuses.

All the current talk of transfers and new blood and “lack of ambition” is just a smokescreen, nothing more than the standard knee-jerk reaction of football fans. (It ceaselessly amuses me that the demands for spending on new players are never accompanied by sensible names. Sign someone, the supporters seem to cry…even if we’re immediately going to realise that they’re crap, start slagging them off and demand a repeat performance.) It is a smokescreen in two ways: first, it hides the considerable achievements of this squad of players; second, it allows them to get away with performances like this.
