Watford took a big step to becoming the ‘best of the rest’ in the Premier League as they moved seventh with a 2-1 win at Huddersfield on Saturday.

Gerard Deulofeu scored an impressive double as Watford kept their European ambitions alive with a comfortable victory over Huddersfield.

Gerard Deulofeu’s double earned Watford victory at Huddersfield, who slumped to a record-equalling Premier League defeat. Deulofeu produced a finish similar to his stunning effort at Wembley earlier this month in Watford’s FA Cup semi-final win over Wolves to give his side an early lead.

I will really miss going to Huddersfield. It is a lovely ground and the pre-match pub is excellent, with good beer, good food and plenty of friendly, efficient bar staff. I hope that they return to the Premier League very soon.

Two sublime individual goals from Roberto Pereyra and Gerard Deulofeu helped Watford secure their best start to a top-flight season and send Huddersfield to the foot of the table.

Watford now boast 19 points from 10 games – bettering their 17 at the same stage of the 1982-83 campaign, where they finished second.

The current Watford manager could not be happier with his squad, but does not expect them to emulate Leicester’s shock title of 2015-16. “This is the best squad in the Premier League,” he said. “I don’t think we’d be able to achieve to win the championship. But we are going to try to enjoy every game, and try to do that for our supporters, help them enjoy it with us.

Nonetheless, here was a challenge we’ve rarely experienced before, certainly since the 1980s. That of being the side… not just favourites but comprehensive favourites, odds-on favourites, expected to win in a top flight game. As with all unfamiliar things it doesn’t feel altogether comfortable, as positive an indicator as it may be of the status to which we’ve elevated ourselves. You’re much less open to disappointment – and pressure – as the underdog. Nor had this edginess been improved by finding ourselves placed at exactly the same spot in Wagamama as we had been pre-Bournemouth. Or by discovering, now as then, that it was much bloody colder than anticipated necessitating hat purchase for the second home game on the trot. (Or, as an aside, that the hat was too small. The costume fitters of the Adhoc theatre group will roll their eyes, full of complaints at the the prohibitive size of my head. Nonetheless… a one size fits all hat shouldn’t be too small…).

The joy was tempered somewhat by the worrying news of Glenn Hoddle’s collapse. Then, when I returned home, I heard of the Leicester owner’s helicopter crashing and the death of a Brighton fan after their game. The Leicester owners have been such a boon to both the club and the town, when something so awful happens, all football fans share the pain. My thoughts are with the family and friends of all affected this weekend.

Tom Ince scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Huddersfield beat Watford 1-0 to move seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Watford keeper Orestis Karnezis had been a virtual spectator before the goal, and his side perhaps deserved a point that would have eased any lingering fears the 12th-placed Hornets have of being dragged back into trouble.

Theoretically Javi Gracia’s men are not out of the relegation woods themselves but they started here as if convinced they were already safe in practical terms. A ridiculous five-minute spell from Roberto Pereyra summed up most of the first half. In the 27th minute he took their first corner and hit it straight out of play. Ninety seconds later he did exactly the same thing. And soon after that he was booked for diving.

Huddersfield doesn’t look like Watford, feel like Watford, smell like Watford. For one thing it’s tentatively and occasionally gloriously sunny as we arrive, which is something that Watford hasn’t been on matchday for a while. For another it’s, like, hilly and that. Daughter 1 blinks away her sleepiness as we emerge from the car… “is this really Yorkshire?”, as if we were in Narnia or Magrathea.

It was another very frustrating afternoon for Watford fans. Our team had certainly been better in the second half, but it was hard to argue that we deserved anything out of the game. Huddersfield seemed to want it more, even if they did have only the one shot on target.

Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner said his side are halfway to Premier League survival after their 4-1 win at Watford.

Aaron Mooy scored twice as Huddersfield thrashed Watford 4-1 with both sides finishing with 10 men amid controversy at Vicarage Road.

For Huddersfield Town, this was proof that football has a tendency to reward the teams who never give up. They had gone 738 minutes without a goal in all competitions on the road, but they are no longer weighed down by that unfortunate statistic.

It’s not always Huddersfield, but it does tend to be Huddersfield quite a lot. The notorious end-of-season calamity under Beppe Sannino was worse than this, except that it probably mattered less. Then there was an incongruous defeat in West Yorkshire during our promotion season when Miguel Layún got rinsed on his debut and promotion felt less than a done deal. And then there was this one almost exactly seventeen years ago; the nadir of the collapse of GT’s last season afforded appropriate disdain by my co-editor who had the good sense not to come up from Hastings on this occasion. Him and a good number of others, the nominal and now traditional 20k gate including a good number present in Season Ticket but not in body.

If the first Huddersfield goal had been scrappy, the second was a horror show. The Watford defence appeared to stop playing as Holebas allowed Quaner to escape and deliver a low cross which flew across the goal to Mooy who had the easy task of tapping it home. In the Rookery, we were looking at each other in disbelief at what we had just seen.

Championship side Watford scored twice after being reduced to 10 men to secure a 4-2 win against Huddersfield. Keith Andrews headed in a corner after Gabriel Tamas’s 65th minute sending off and Almen Abdi curled in a late right-footed strike to secure the points.

There had been questions before the game, more were raised during the ninety-plus minutes and we’ll get to those, I suppose. But for the moment revel again in that fabulous final half hour or so, which in the manner of a cup-tie blew away all concerns, quibbles, tactics, formations. Primal, ferocious and utterly captivating entertainment. Who could fail to be carried away by it?

While I’ve been writing this report, the news of Beppe Sannino’s departure has broken. In my few encounters with Beppe, I found him a very engaging man, but I hadn’t always been a fan of the way his teams played. There were a lot of dreadful performances last season and the last encounter with Huddersfield was certainly one in which you felt that the players had no respect for the manager. That was also my impression at the end of season dinner. When Beppe took the stage to make his speech, there was little warmth or respect emanating from the tables of players who were just next to us. I was amazed that he was still in charge at the start of the season. The fact that he has now left suggests that the Pozzos have found his replacement. Someone described the contrast of the Zola and Sannino reigns as being from a holiday camp to a boot camp. I hope that the new manager is somewhere in the middle. We have a huge amount of talent in this team, with some organization and discipline we could be unbeatable.

Substitute Danny Ward scored a hat-trick to help Huddersfield Town finish the season on a high and end Watford’s 10-game unbeaten run at Vicarage Road.

The “lap of honour” at the end of the game was peculiar in the extreme. The stands were… not empty, but not thronging with acclaim as they surely would have been given any kind of performance on the day. It’s been a disappointing season, given the expectations we went in with… but it’s not been that bad for the most part. There have been good wins, good performances, and everyone wants to leave happy. As it was, those that remained were surely largely there for one man only.
