Watford kept alive their hopes of reaching the Championship play-offs and dented Ipswich’s with victory at Vicarage Road.

Beppe Sannino said: “Tozser’s the only player I can’t change in this team because I don’t have any other players with his characteristics. He gave us the right balance. He’s the only player that knows he’s going to play in advance.”

This was a game from a parallel universe. A parallel universe in which this season panned out as we thought it might, in which we really did rip the division up, too good for whatever the Championship could throw at us. In which a team turning up and haring after us, closing us down up the pitch and denying us space and waiting for us to make a mistake wasn’t anything like enough. A parallel universe in which, perversely, Beppe Sannino had replaced Gianfranco anyway. Go figure. I never claimed to be an expert in this stuff.

Michael Chopra ended his long wait for a goal with a last-minute winner as Ipswich took the points from Gianfranco Zola’s Watford.

Ipswich goalkeeper Scott Loach, who had left Watford for Portman Road in the summer, was called into action four minutes from the end of normal to deal with a 20-yard shot from Matej Vydra. Ipswich had conceded 45 goals on their Championship travels last term, more than any other club in the division, but Loach was all smiles on the final whistle as he gained a clean sheet on his return to Vicarage Road.

There was a banner in the crowd that read “Forza Watford”, reflecting the new Italian feel at the club, but many more performances like this and it will have to be changed to “Arrivederci” instead. If Gianfranco Zola thought life in the Championship was going to be easy after his new side’s victory on the opening day on Saturday, Michael Chopra’s winner in the 90th minute for Ipswich showed him how punishing the division can be.

All is unfamiliar. Sunshine and joyous victory in Croydon; torrential rain for the first home game, followed by last-minute defeat to our favourite opponents. The names of the new loan signings currently resemble a set of characters from an obscure role-playing game: “Vydra – The Scorpion” (X-Factor: 4.9); “Abdi – The Thinker” (Patience: 0.7%); “Pudil – The Unknown” (?: ?); “Anya – The Midget” (Turning Circle: 0.1); “Geijo – The Ghost” (Invisibility: 95%); “Beleck – The Giant” (Fear Factor: x3). It’s all a bit weird. There’s a moment when Manuel Almunia cack-handedly fumbles a cross onto the penalty spot and everyone almost breathes a sigh of relief at seeing something so thoroughly in its place.

Sean Murray and Troy Deeney scored second-half goals to cancel out Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’s opener as Watford fought back to beat Ipswich at home.

Watford hit back to beat Ipswich and extend Town’s long wait for victory over their Hertfordshire rivals with a 2-1 win at Vicarage Road.

We walk to the ground in warm spring sunshine amid the kind of careless end-of-season haze which seemed so distant barely a few weeks ago and so utterly implausible before Christmas.

The game was postponed due to a frozen pitch. It was eventually played on 15th March 2011.

BBC: Two quick goals just before the break from Stephen McGinn and Marvin Sordell were enough to sink Ipswich as Watford moved up to third in the Championship.

BHappy: Agonising as the dropping off at the end of the game is, I can’t help but feel that rather than a deliberate strategy this sort of nervous response to a situation is simply what you’re going to get from a young team. Three of our starting midfield were 21 or under… much as our nerves were fraying badly, I’ll happily cope with that in return for the plusses twelve games in. Third place? Top scorers in the division? And perhaps two poor performances in the League (Leeds, Hull)? I’ll take that with both hands.

Will Hoskins’ late strike helped Watford edge away from the drop zone and dragged Ipswich back into trouble. Henri Lansbury opened the scoring for the Hornets when his 35-yard free-kick eluded everyone and sailed straight in.

Yes, yes, Will Hoskins. We’ll come to him in a moment, for we must first pause to salute Lord Doyley. The bravura pirouette in the first half, followed by splendid left-footed cross onto the head of Heidar Helguson at the far post, was the stuff of ten minute standing ovations. But the defending often deserved a similar response: one early Ipswich attack bounded eagerly over the halfway line, discovered Jay Demerit too far forward, threatened to burst dangerously into the penalty area…and then found itself quietly shepherded to somewhere near the corner flag, any spark of danger suffocated by a gigantic, inescapable wet blanket. He must be utterly miserable to play against, ninety minutes of having your bright ideas tied up in red tape by the local health and safety officer.
