Goalkeeper Scott Loach was the hero for Watford as he pulled off a string of fine saves to earn his side a point.

Scott Loach.  Big respec’.  Admittedly Ipswich’s approach didn’t test the less reliable aspects of his game, but a flawless performance from the keeper today culminating in a phenomenal save in the second half.

BBC Sport: Watford’s John-Joe O’Toole scored in the dying minutes to secure a come-from-behind win over Ipswich.

BHappy: Forget the detail. Forget the football. When was the last time we had as much fun at a football match? Or a celebration to match that of the winning goal?

guardianWatford do things differently. Appointing Aidy Boothroyd started it. He came untainted with failure and had his own ideas. After instant success and equally instant fall, their faith is undimmed. So is his. “I’m blessed for talent,” he said after victory put them top of the table for a few hours, “blessed now with five strikers.”

BHappy imageEarly goals are kinda handy in setting a positive tone… might have been a bit edgier otherwise.

BBC SportDamien Francis broke Ipswich Town’s defiance with a late winner in this FA Cup fifth-round tie at Vicarage Road.

guardianFor Watford the mixed double of reaching an FA Cup final while being relegated remains a possibility although on the evidence of this error-strewn fifth-round victory over Ipswich their chances of staying in the Cup are only marginally better than their prospects of remaining in the Premiership, and those are slim indeed.

Just before the full-time whistle, it was announced that Aidy Boothroyd would like the fans to stay behind for a few minutes after the game for a special word… What actually transpired was a practice penalty shoot out: a team of yellow against a team of red. Aidy asked the crowd to boo and create a “hostile” atmosphere which was fun, to say the least. I won’t list all the takers but Marlon King scored (top right corner, unsaveable), Theo Robinson scored (just like Marlon, could be good that kid), Gavin Mahon missed (which could be a blessing), Matthew Spring scored (after being treated to a chorus of “scum, scum, scum” followed by his usual song), Alec Chamberlain missed (a very unpopular result) and some others scored, some missed. Yellow won.

BBC: Back to winning ways and deservedly so, Ipswich were awful, but credit to Watford who produced an excellent away performance.

BSAD: Last week, while filling in a questionnaire about Watford for a Sheffield Wednesday website, I was asked what sort of manager Aidy Boothroyd was, as the questioner admitted he knew little about our new manager. My first thought was simple…we’re only just finding out ourselves! From what we’ve learnt so far, he’s shown himself to be charismatic, bullish and he has the total support and the trust of his players, without which no manager can succeed. Crucially, he’s also won over the majority of fans. Aidy Boothroyd has a future in football management, that’s for certain, and hopefully, given time and proper support from our board of directors, he just might take us places.
