23rd October 2004- Championship, Watford 2 Ipswich Town 2

Persistence was everything here, when there seemed to be nothing much else to cling to. There’ll be talk of match-turning substitutions and heroic spirit, sure…but this wasn’t a comeback, not as such. Nothing changed. Rather, when it appeared that the cause was utterly hopeless, when we were two-nil down to a team that had gradually and increasingly out-classed us, when the ceaseless pelting rain seemed to sum up the afternoon, we just kept going. We kept our heads up, we kept our minds clear, and we kept going. Basic professionalism or pure faith, depending on whether you’re a romantic or not…but whatever, two-nil suddenly became two-two, with fifteen minutes still to play. We’d done nothing differently, really, but that was precisely the point.

27th September 2003- New Division One, Watford 1 Ipswich Town 2

Ipswich came back from a goal down to secure their first away win of the season at the expense of struggling Watford.

Here we are, then. Up to our necks in a swamp and sinking rapidly. You don’t need me to tell you want this result means, a ghastly defeat in a must-win fixture. And you don’t need me to tell you how it felt either, how the last thirty minutes were like watching your home being destroyed by a wrecking ball. And you certainly don’t need me to attempt to lift spirits with some kind of faux-chirpy, it’s-only-a-game, chin-up-son philosophy. No, you don’t need that.

17th November 2002- New Division One, Watford 0 Ipswich Town 2

Goals from Alun Armstrong and Jamie Clapham within 12 minutes of the restart gave Ipswich a well-earned victory over play-off chasing Watford.

Rituals are very important to the superstitious football fan, a cornerstone of the build-up to any game. Having a match put back to a Sunday to accommodate your opponents’ holiday plans may threaten to scupper these routines, but they’re still pursued if more by dint of habit than in honest belief that they will influence a game’s outcome.

It was a curious match, in a thoroughly depressing kinda way. Despite dominating for long periods, despite out-doing Ipswich in terms of goal attempts, we were strictly second best. In the final third, there was simply no comparison. The first half statistics said it all – three shots for Ipswich, of which two were goals and one forced Alec Chamberlain into a fine save; five shots for Watford, none of which required Richard Wright to move a muscle. That’s the difference.

26th September 1998- New Division One, Watford 1 Ipswich Town 0

BSAD imageOn this occasion, facing arguably the most potent forward line in the division, we stared defeat full in the face. Then we kicked it right in the nuts. In other words, we absolutely refused to surrender the points, despite several spells when an Ipswich goal seemed completely inevitable. To quote a cliché, you make your own luck.
