31st July 2010-Friendly, Watford 0 Charlton Athletic 1

Watford signed off their pre-season campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Charlton Athletic at Vicarage Road this afternoon. An early goal from Danny Graham, with his fourth of the summer making him the top scorer of the warm-up matches, was to prove enough as the Hornets encouragingly completed back-to-back wins with successive clean sheets.

Watford secured Championship survival with an impressive win over Reading.

Well thank heavens for that.

16th March 2010- Championship, Watford 2 Ipswich Town 1

Will Hoskins’ late strike helped Watford edge away from the drop zone and dragged Ipswich back into trouble. Henri Lansbury opened the scoring for the Hornets when his 35-yard free-kick eluded everyone and sailed straight in.

Yes, yes, Will Hoskins. We’ll come to him in a moment, for we must first pause to salute Lord Doyley. The bravura pirouette in the first half, followed by splendid left-footed cross onto the head of Heidar Helguson at the far post, was the stuff of ten minute standing ovations. But the defending often deserved a similar response: one early Ipswich attack bounded eagerly over the halfway line, discovered Jay Demerit too far forward, threatened to burst dangerously into the penalty area…and then found itself quietly shepherded to somewhere near the corner flag, any spark of danger suffocated by a gigantic, inescapable wet blanket. He must be utterly miserable to play against, ninety minutes of having your bright ideas tied up in red tape by the local health and safety officer.

18th April 2009- Championship, Watford 0 Birmingham City 1

Cameron Jerome stepped off the bench to fire in a late winner at Watford and put Birmingham in pole position to join neighbours Wolves in winning promotion.

Watford goalkeeper Scott Loach had earlier had an inspired 45 minutes to frustrate a dominant Birmingham in the first half. But Brendan Rodgers’ side were much improved after the break and could have gone ahead themselves before Jerome made the breakthrough.

A patchy performance saw Watford give as good as they got in the second half and left the manager grateful to his reserve goalkeeper, Colin Doyle, starting a league game for the first time this season. He turned a goal-bound Grzegorz Rasiak header past a post just after the hour.

A touching send-off for Mike Keen before kickoff, with the Birmingham fans adding their applause to that of everyone connected with the club he once managed. I wasn’t around in any meaningful sense back then, I’m afraid, but Simon Marchant was and you can read his tribute here.

24th January 2009- FA Cup Fourth Round, Watford 4 Crystal Palace 3

Watford booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup despite a late Crystal Palace rally at Vicarage Road.

Some quite terrific goals all told;  the first owed a lot to defensive ineptitude that wouldn’t have looked out of place at the other end of the park, the third could also have been better defended although it was finished well and suggested a long-missed stock move.  But the second and fourth were marvellous breakaways, truly exhilarating.  Good stuff.
