BSAD image BSAD reports:“Anything is possible.”  It’s the best phrase of the day, undoubtedly. And it comes from, if you like, the best man. Anything is possible. Not anything’s possible, a shrug of the shoulders to say that, hey, it just might rain five pound notes tomorrow. That’s not Adrian Boothroyd. No, take out the apostrophe: anything is possible. A defiant, substantial statement of intent. A summary of the man, perhaps.

BSAD image You’re not taking it all in. Not really. You can’t.  And why should you? The events you’ve just witnessed don’t happen to lowly Watford. You’re standing in someone else’s dreamland, a fantasy world of yellow and red confetti – delight, delirium and disbelief are the dominant emotions.

BBC Sport Watford booked their place in the Premiership with a convincing victory over Leeds in a frantic play-off final.

guardian Kevin Blackwell could never have imagined the implications of his coach Adrian Boothroyd joining Watford last year. After little more than 14 months in charge the man whose appointment was greeted by supporters at Vicarage Road with concern, bewilderment and general unease yesterday etched his name in the club’s history and confirmed his status as one of the brightest young managers in English football when he secured promotion to the Premiership at the expense of his former mentor.

BSAD: Word had already reached us in the chatter beneath the stand that Gavin Mahon had succumbed to the dead leg inflicted by Saturday’s referee. With Matthew Spring already missing (due to a clause in his transfer that is as graceless as much of Leeds’ conduct this evening) and with Dom Blizzard still absent we fielded a central midfield of eighteen year-old Al Bangura and full-back James Chambers. Chris Eagles was back in the side in place of Anthony McNamee; otherwise it was the same line-up that faced Coventry.

BSAD: Jordan Stewart’s poor header back to Foster allowed Hulse to intercept, push the ball past the on-rushing Foster and land in a heap on the floor. From my appalling view, five rows back at the other end, I couldn’t tell you if Foster made much contact with Hulse, but what I’m pretty sure of is that Hulse was never going to reach the ball for a second touch. Referee Mike Jones must have seen otherwise though and bowed to home pressure by sending Foster for an early bath.

guardianIf the Premiership is considered boring and lacking in quality these days, God forbid either of these sides should rise from the Championship to join it.

BSAD image“If you like dubstep but didn’t reach DMZ’s fourth incredible Brixton bash, where were ya?” asks Martin Clark, by way of introduction to his vital monthly round-up of London’s grime and dubstep scenes for the excellent Pitchfork site. And I don’t have an answer to that, frankly.

9th April 2005- Championship, Watford 1 Leeds United 2

Aidy Boothroyd’s first programme notes.

BSAD image BSAD report: I was there, obviously. But less so, much less so. That’s not to suggest that I didn’t fully appreciate that this was a vital match for Watford Football Club, nor that I didn’t applaud a courageous, occasionally inspired, and much less deeply flawed team performance that rose to the occasion and deserved to take more from it than mere encouragement. I saw it all, with nose pressed up against the glass, conscious of everything and yet not part of it. When we scored, I heard myself saying “Yes!” and felt myself rising to my feet; the instincts that would’ve done those things in a reactive blur don’t seem to be working properly. I saw it all, and felt only echoes, remote tremors.

Why? I don’t know. This is new to me, all new. What I do know is that, like so many amazing things that happen in football stadia, the total support demanded by Graham Simpson requires the suspension of disbelief. It needs the conjuring up of an “us” from so much that has so little in common; an “us” that encompasses the stands, the dressing room and the directors’ box to become a football club rather than just a PLC with employees and customers. But you can’t put all of that on hold for three weeks – three weeks of exercising absolute power and authority, of claiming leadership, of seizing complete responsibility – then expect to resume where you left off. “Us” is for fifty-two weeks of the year, or not at all. And you can’t generate genuine belief in a long-term plan for survival and eventual prosperity, then demand the same belief in a new approach when you suddenly change your mind.

3rd May 2000- Premier League. Leeds United 3 Watford 1

BBC Sport: Leeds cruised to a comfortable win over relegated Watford to greatly improve their chances of a Champions League place next season.

Daily Telegraph, 4 May 2000
Guardian, 4 May 2000

BSAD: The goal, when it arrived, was gorgeous. Hyde found Perpetuini on the left, who sent a very deep cross to the far post. Helguson leapt impossibly high to cushion the ball down to Foley, whose crisp half volley left Martyn with no chance. Olé, olé olé olé, Foley, Foley. We cared about this one

BSAD imageBSAD report: Sandwiched between Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United, it’s easy to see Leeds as something of a respite. It has as much to do with not seeing their shirts on every high street and their absence from the intolerable hype of the Champions League as anything. Above all, they’re still recognisable as a football club (fans that sing, quaint stuff like that) rather than the entertainments arm of some giant multinational – although the imminent share purchase by Sky will soon put paid to that. You get three points if you beat them, but you don’t get to parade around the office on Monday morning.

Body language, it was all in the body language. As I watched the Golden Boys warming-up, I could sense something just wasn’t quite right; they seemed sluggish and tired, the usual passion and vigor was missing. It was almost as if there was some kind of player-fan synergy going on. Some of their lethargy rubbed off onto us and some of ours onto them.
