BSAD report:It’s having to start to write reports like this which make you long for a word which can reproduce the sound which those present in the Oak Road End at Kenilworth Road made on Saturday 4th October 1997 after Peter Kennedy slammed home our fourth goal.

BSAD report:In a twinkling of an eye, the past ten years was forgotten, consigned to the history books as meaningless statistics on a page. All of a sudden what mattered was Luton on an October afternoon and a mighty Watford team.

In the end, then, it was a draw that we fought hard for. The defence takes most credit for keeping Luton at bay even when they seemed certain to score. But the disappointment in the failure to beat our local rivals for the umpteenth time in the last ten years rather dwarfs any satisfaction from the result – a win against Luton would represent such a massive morale boost, yet once again the opportunity has slipped away.

BSAD imageBSAD report:It makes a change for us to play Luton when they’re on a roll – it’s usually us enjoying a good run which, inevitably, comes to a sticky end against our local rivals. But nothing much changes – April 1987 was the last time we beat them in a proper match (the Anglo-Italian cup, in which you were allowed to name everyone in the ground as a substitute and play rush goalie, doesn’t count and we know it).

The most important local derby for years and, perhaps inevitably, it ends in massive anticlimax. We may be able to take some consolation from the fact that Luton’s season has been as bad as ours but the knowledge that we’ll have to visit this hellhole of an away end (where there’s so little legroom you can’t even sit in the seat you’ve paid stlg 12.50 for) next season doesn’t exactly fill my heart with joy.

21st November 1995- New Division One, Watford 1 Luton Town 1

Eight and a half bloody years! If you don’t count the Anglo-Italian (and, let’s face it, nobody does), that’s how long it is since we beat Luton. To Watford fans, that really hurts. On the evidence of this awful performance, we’ll be waiting for a hell of a long time.
