The Hornets dug in well for the first half but the game changed 88 seconds after the interval when Sterling slotted home Bacary Sagna’s cross.

The opening stages were played almost exclusively in the Watford half, but the defence was standing firm as the hosts dominated possession.

5th January 2013- FA Cup Third Round, Manchester City 3 Watford 0

Watford manager Gianfranco Zola, twice an FA Cup winner as a player, predicted his team would be dangerous opponents for the 2011 winners, especially considering their fine league record away from home.

Watford almost caught City napping straight from the kick-off as Fernando Forestieri beat the home offside trap to go one-on-one with Costel Pantilimon but the big keeper stood firm to keep out the shot out with his feet.

Had that one gone in, City may have faced a different challenge against a confident team on the hunt for a giant-killing.

It is easy to see why Watford are going so well in the Championship. As might be expected of a Gianfranco Zola team, they have some lively attackers and ideas. Joleon Lescott and Vincent Kompany had their hands full with Matej Vydra, who embarrassed the City central defenders for pace in the opening few minutes. Trying to play on the break only resulted in the visitors finding themselves pushed on to the back foot, however, allowing City to keep rolling forward.

In a game where City enjoyed by far the most possession and spent long periods laying siege to the Watford goalmouth, the Championship side managed to create the two clearest opportunities of the afternoon, and missed them both.

Watford became the first team to be relegated from the Premiership this season after drawing with Manchester City at Vicarage Road.

Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd admitted his team ‘did not have enough’ after today’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City meant they were relegated to the Championship.

Your one-word match report is:fitting.

20th January 2002- New Division One, Watford 1 Manchester City 2

Kevin Keegan’s promotion bandwagon was given a slice of good fortune as Watford gifted Manchester City all three points on Sunday.

As early as the quarter hour mark we were forced into a reshuffle as Cox limped off having earlier received treatment. Doyley dropped into his more accustomed central role, with Heidar continuing his tour of the outfield positions as a right wing-back.

At this point, anyway, Luca brought Helguson on, and I assume we went to four in defence, with Glass dropping back and Helguson, inexplicably, playing wide right. Hindsight is a beautiful thing, and there’s no denying Pennant’s usefulness up front, but isn’t he supposed to be a right winger and Helguson a striker?

A difficult pitch and a difficult opponent, full of tricks and movement, but we played as well as we could, which is all you can ask for. Although City were better than us, technically, our battling performance could have earned a draw. Helguson’s unfortunate own goal gave City a win they barely deserved: that’s what happens when you ask strikers to play a defensive role.
