24th April 2004- New Division One, Watford 1 Norwich City 2 Leave a Reply http://watford.fcdb.info?id=4605 Newly-promoted Norwich moved another step closer to clinching the Division One title with goals from Damien Francis and Leon McKenzie. Debutant Dominic Blizzard set up a tense finale with a late header that ended Norwich’s 401-minute shut-out. They didn’t know whether to celebrate or to worry. There were nearly 5,000 Norwich fans here, another 6,000 watching a beam-back at Carrow Road and more than 3,000 had turned up to watch a midweek reserve game and listen to the closing minutes of Crystal Palace’s victory over Sunderland that had confirmed City’s promotion to the Premiership. So, this was someone else’s day. Appropriately, it was largely someone else’s game too…which isn’t to say that we were massively outclassed, merely that only the last ten or fifteen minutes suggested that the result wasn’t an inevitability. A bit of a disappointment, then, for it would’ve been lovely to have kept this little run going, building up some proper momentum at last. In the end, we’ll just have to be content with the knowledge that this could really have mattered, and hurt. https://www.soccerbase.com/matches/results.sd?date=2004-04-24 https://www.11v11.com/league-tables/league-division-1/24-april-2004/ 24th April 2010- Championship, Watford 3 Reading 0 Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
19th January 2003- New Division One, Watford 2 Norwich City 1 Leave a Reply There was something almost Betjeman-esque about the first 45 minutes here yesterday, so effectively did 22 well-paid professionals evoke the spirit of the thousands of park games that kicked off around the country an hour or so earlier. This was a wearisome game. A dreary, generally uneventful, rarely attractive football match between two largely uninspired sides. And played at a ludicrous time, just for effect. The equivalent of being dragged from your bed at five o’clock in the morning and forced to watch back-to-back episodes of “Heartbeat”, while being kept awake by periodic prodding with a blunt stick. Probably the most forgettable game since…erm, I can’t remember. But with a reward for anyone who managed to stick with it until the end. The match itself couldn’t have made much of an impression on the TV viewers, though the three points have brought Watford back in touch with the teams chasing for a play-off place. Whilst a top half finish would have been beyond most Watford fans’ expectations at the start of the season, it is great to see that there is some hope of some end of season games. Keep up the good work Ray, Terry and the lads. 31st August 2002- New Division One, Norwich City 4 Watford 0 http://watford.fcdb.info/index.php?page=matches BBC: Norwich strolled to a comfortable victory over nine-man Watford which ensured they stayed up with the Division One pace-setters and maintained their 100% home record. The Observer, 1 Sep 2002 Daily Telegraph, 2 Sep 2000 BSAD: Having missed both the debacle at Fratton Park and the astonishing demolition of Coventry over the bank holiday weekend, my perspective going into this game was very much one of a man who’d just had a blindfold removed having been spun on the spot several times in total darkness. The sense of disorientation was furthered when Danny Webber, source of so much of Monday’s excitement, was significant by his absence from the squad warming up in front of us in the sunshine. The sense of disappointment in the away end when the line-ups were confirmed by the tannoy announcer (with what is becoming an obligatory exaggeration of excitement for such individuals) was almost palpable – Foley in up front with Jamie Hand re-appearing on the bench. Webber, it transpired, had picked up a knock in training. https://www.soccerbase.com/matches/results.sd?date=2002-08-31 https://www.11v11.com/league-tables/league-division-1/31-august-2002/ Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
26th February 2002- New Division One, Watford 2 Norwich City 1 Leave a Reply At seven o’clock, debate is raging in the Estcourt. Whatever his mistakes, I can’t help feeling a little sorry for Luca Vialli, who has so far failed to create a team that can speak on his behalf and is therefore in the position of having every word in every sentence in every interview picked apart. Personally, I’m thoroughly bored by it all…so many opinions, so many personalities, so much guff (and I include this guff, of course) where there should be football. It’s a long time since I have been able to pack life’s niggles into a box and keep the lid on it all the way through a Watford match. For me, going to football used to be all about leaving the outside world behind for ninety minutes, and immersing myself in a world of yellow and red. Somewhere along the way, the boundaries came down, and the world seeped in; the colours lost their brightness. https://www.soccerbase.com/matches/results.sd?date=2002-02-26 https://www.11v11.com/league-tables/league-division-1/26-february-2002/ Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
