23rd October 2001- New Division One, Watford 1 Nottingham Forest 2

Nottingham Forest ended Watford’s recent good run, moving up to eighth in Division One after their win at Vicarage Road.

If we learnt anything from yesterday, it was that our league position doesn’t lie. As our recent victories have demonstrated, we’re much, much better than the teams who’ll be struggling against relegation in May. As last night showed rather starkly, we’re still some way behind the division’s best sides.

BSAD imageBSAD report: When you win, you’re fantastic. The manager is a tactical genius – he knows exactly what to do in every situation, bringing the best from his assortment of astute bargain buys and trusting ex-youth teamers. The players themselves are athletic, finely honed demi-gods, each heroic in the pursuit of the victory. The fans are united, re-affirming their identity and confirming their support from cradle to grave.

BSAD imageBSAD report: Let’s not forget that it was on the very same day (April 3rd) two years ago that we started our memorable unbeaten run which kept going for the remaining eight games of the season.

21st October 2000- New Division One, Nottingham Forest 0 Watford 2

BBC Sport: A first-half Micah Hyde brace was enough to give Watford a valuable away win at Nottingham Forest which puts them within two points of leaders Fulham.

BSAD: Perhaps as close as a Watford side has ever got to the “total football” ideal. Two fine goals from a midfielder, wide players switching flanks at will and frequently coming back to help out in defence, full backs hurtling into the penalty area to get onto the end of flowing attacking moves, central defenders striding over the halfway line. Had we tried to play like this a few years ago, we would’ve seen the kind of chaos that would ensue if everyone ignored the highway code at a busy roundabout…but now it makes sense, it works so well, and there’s great joy in the knowledge that we can still improve.
