20th November 2010- Championship, Watford 1 Reading 1

There was much about Watford’s performance that was concerning but nothing terribly surprising, and nothing for which a clear solution presents itself. We knew that we were going into the season with a young side that was going to be dependent on senior players; we’ve already seen, in Cowie’s absence, the impact that removing one of those cogs can have on the whole shape of the side. More of the same today; Jordon Mutch and Stephen McGinn both had reasonable games in the middle of the park but the whole side missed the steadying influence, the aggression, the option, the foot-on-the-ball of John Eustace in the centre. Ross Jenkins might have reminded us of what he best offers, an option not really suited to pairing with the skipper for whom he’d have been the most obvious replacement but for his ankle injury.

Watford secured Championship survival with an impressive win over Reading.

Well thank heavens for that.

26th September 2009- Championship, Reading 1 Watford 1

This was the first and only time we faced Brendan Rodgers’ Reading side.  He quit as Hornets boss in the summer to become the Royals manager just two weeks after saying that journalists who continually linked him with the Reading job were questioning his integrity.

He was sacked by Reading on 16th December 2009 when they were 21st.  Under his management they only won 5 league games.

BBC SportReading’s wait for a home league win goes on after Danny Graham scored a second-half equaliser for Watford.  One ex-Watford player, Jobi McAnuff, set up another, Grzegorz Rasiak, to give Reading an early lead.

BHappy imageLook, we weren’t there, ok? So if you’re looking for insightful thunks you’d better look somewhere else; the reasons for non-attendance shall, as ever, remain private but it should go without saying that it was fairly heavy stuff.  I’m assuming that people will want to discuss the match anyway, so do so here if you really must.

Watford, who had a penalty appeal for handball turned down by referee Andy D’Urso, barely troubled Reading and remain close to relegation territory.

“There were many aspects I was pleased with,” said Rodgers, who had no triumphant return to the club whose academy he used to direct. “I’m obviously disapopointed to concede five minutes before half-time because I thought we had played well and dominated possession and in the second half we had a crazy one-minute spell that killed the game.”

I’m glad I was only watching it on the telly.

The ‘Ghost Goal’ game where Stuart Attwell awarded a goal to Reading on the strength of his Assistant Referee Nigel Bannister telling him he thought he’d seen the ball cross the goalline despite being the only one in the whole ground to think so. It was awarded as a John Eustace own goal.

Watford were denied a win by a late penalty – and a farcical decision to allow an earlier goal to stand. Linesman Nigel Bannister flagged for a Reading goal instead of a corner after John Eustace challenged Noel Hunt and, incredibly, a goal was awarded.

BHappy image report: Let’s get the obvious out of the way first. What a completely mental decision.
