The ‘Ghost Goal’ game where Stuart Attwell awarded a goal to Reading on the strength of his Assistant Referee Nigel Bannister telling him he thought he’d seen the ball cross the goalline despite being the only one in the whole ground to think so. It was awarded as a John Eustace own goal.

Watford squandered the chance to move off the foot of the Premiership and above Charlton, who were thrashed by Spurs, as they were held by Reading.

Boothroyd has been encouraged to hear that Ashley Young has no intention of leaving Watford next month, despite the interest being shown in the 21-year-old midfielder by Arsenal and Aston Villa. On Saturday the makeshift striker struggled to make any impact against the resolute Ibrahima Sonko and Ivar Ingimarsson, and even his fierce 25-yard shot, Watford’s first moment of menace, was saved confidently by Marcus Hahnemann.

Today’s one-word match report is: futile.

In recent years, Reading have snatched the best of the points in these fixtures, but this season, under Adrian Boothroyd – not so long ago referred to as ‘who?’ – Watford have come up with a much better challenge.

After a successful start to the season against some mid-table teams, Reading were the first promotion-challenging side that Watford were to encounter, our toughest test so far, and a good sign of where the team would end up at the close of the season. It would also show that certain players, who had been questioned for their ability and right to a place in the starting line up, were more than able to play extremely well in this league, and prove their doubters wrong. This was an important match for everyone, it would tell us a lot about the new Watford FC.

Reading kept up their promotion push as they cruised past struggling Watford.

…festive cheer has been spread throughout Hertfordshire and beyond by a sequence of results on the 26th December that (excluding today, but you can do your own maths) has seen us score just once in response to ten goals against. Because football doesn’t work like that, there’s a solitary win over Bristol City in 1998 – Gifton Noel-Williams by the corner flag, and all that – to confuse matters, but anyone looking for further highlights would have to make do with a couple of postponements. Or three nil-nil draws, including that one against Notts County and one at Wycombe twelve months later that has apparently (until now) been expunged from history in order to spare anyone from having to recall it.

If we were somewhat flattered on Tuesday, we were plainly insulted on this occasion.

The weather was strange. It didn’t know whether it wanted to rain or not. On fourteen minutes, Mr Webber didn’t know whether he wanted to score or not, and throughout the match we never seemed to grasp whether we were playing at home or not.

Irrespective of the detail of what follows below, we visited a side with a hundred percent home record, a place where our own record is less than outstanding. We rested arguably our five most effective players, three of whose replacements had eight senior starts between them. And we won three-nil. Reading rested players themselves but in lesser numbers. What was close to a first choice eleven had their applecart upset, with Danny, Gav, H, Dyche and Ards (but for a thirty-second cameo) with their feet up ready for Saturday. So much for damage limitation.
