Coventry salvaged a point at Watford courtesy of late goals from David Bell and Lukas Jutkiewicz. Will Buckley headed the Hornets in front and Coventry old boy John Eustace fired in a second after the Sky Blues only partially cleared a corner.

Coventry City produced a dramatic comeback at Vicarage Road to snatch a 2-2 draw against Watford. Malky Mackay’s Watford appeared set to follow up an opening game win over Norwich City with another three points after Will Buckley and John Eustace scored.

Boothroyd. Still can’t bring myself to like him. Didn’t boo him, but…. in accepting, revelling in the reception of the crowd at the end of the game, he should have stopped short of the fist-waving celebration. You were welcomed back Aidy, but we support Watford, not you. We weren’t going to share in your celebration. Perhaps old habits die hard.

Perhaps the true measure of the strength of any club’s youth set-up is how many players progress to professional status, whether at their own club or elsewhere. Just as Ray Lewington’s fledglings have been getting attention for helping Watford reach the semi-finals of the Carling Cup, it was old boy Gifton Noel-Williams who undid them with the only goal of this game.

Given that we had to play a fixture on the Saturday after the cup heroics, I don’t know who I’d have rather we faced. A weak, but attacking side, short on confidence, short on aerial ability, yet suicidally adventurous when in the lead. There’s not many of them about. Those are not, er, typical characteristics of sides in this division; more to the point, they are completely the reverse of how Stoke play. And they have Gifton Noel-Williams, a former player and thus guaranteed to play well against us. So it was easy to be negative about this game, with the likelihood of a Lord Mayor’s After Party very slim, and the home support mainly concerned with singing about future trips to Anfield or even farther away. It’s rarely a chore, though, watching this Watford team, and it took a long time to rule out the possibility of another great result in this most gratifying of seasons to be supporting them.

20th July 2004- Friendly, Northwood 0 Watford 4

This was the game in which Jay DeMerit, appearing for Northwood, so impressed Ray Lewington that he was taken on a two week trial which led to him being offered a season long contract at Vicarage Road. He never actually got to make a competitive appearance for Northwood.

Within two and a half years Jay had scored one of the goals in the Playoff Final at the Millennium Stadium which promoted Aidy Boothroyd’s side to the top flight, was playing regularly in the Premier League and captained Watford for the first time in December 2006 in the home game with Reading.

Danny Spiller’s first senior goal denied Watford their first win of the season in an entertaining game at Vicarage Road.

BSAD report: It took less than ten minutes for the restoration of Heidar Helguson to a forward role and the introduction of Lee Cook on the left wing to be thoroughly vindicated, in practice as well as in theory. And the latter set up the second too, enabling Danny Webber to score his first goal in a proper Watford shirt (and a “Davis – 11” vest).
