17th January 2009- Championship, Watford 0 Sheffield United 2

Sheffield United extended their unbeaten run to eight games, thanks to ex-Watford striker Darius Henderson. After a frustrating opening period for the visitors, Henderson headed into the path of Danny Webber who swivelled and fired into the net.

My brother speculated on the way back to the car that this may be the worst Watford team he has ever watched.  I’d still have to cite Colin Lee’s late 1990 vintage as worse.  But looking back, that side may have featured McLaughlin, Andy Kennedy, Mark Gavin… but it also featured David James, Gary Porter, Nigel Gibbs, Paul Wilkinson….  And the fact that we’re as much as having the conversation…???

BHappy: We’re sixth from bottom, but this season is already vastly more fun that the last in which we finished sixth from top. Go figure…

Lee Williamson grabbed his first goal for the club as Watford maintained their 100% start to the season with a narrow victory over Sheffield United.

BHappy imageBHappy report: Six points from these two league games without playing terribly well is a bit of a result.

Another man having a bad day was Alvin Martin. He was reporting on the game for Sky and really could have picked a better spot to stand than directly above the Sheff Utd fans. ‘Stand up if you hate West Ham’ and ‘Cheap suit from Matalan’ were among the chants during his broadcasts. We responded with ‘there’s only one Carlos Tevez’ Full marks earlier on though for the Sheff Utd fans who pretty much to a man all appaluded Don Fraser getting his throughly deserved Barclays Supporter of the Year award.

We were seated, for the first time in a number of seasons, in the lower tier behind the goal and whilst the view was still reasonable the lack of ceiling to trap and project the noise did little for the atmosphere in the away end. Nor did its sparse population, particularly out on the flanks where we were situated… the prospect of a longish midweek trip for a game on Sky in February had been enough to leave plenty of spaces in seats around us, giving the stand the air of our away ends during Kenny Jackett’s season in the Third Division nearly a decade ago. On the pitch, however, things have moved on quite a lot since then…

If the first half was a welcome surprise, the second half is nothing short of exceptional, perhaps the finest forty-five of the season. Within moments of the restart an excellent looping ball out of midfield gives Marlon something to chase and he charges past the hapless defender, brings the ball inside and crashes it into the net. 2-0! I am kneeling in front of the TV arms aloft, vaguely aware that Mate and Wife are probably making faces behind my back, but who cares. 2-0!
