The game didn’t start as much as detonate, and for the first forty-five minutes we were carried away by a torrent of action. Only two sides playing inventive attacking football and defending like goons can generate excitement like this.

It’s hard to explain: the football dumb, simple, slapstick, shambolic but this is better, for me, than eking out a Coventry existence in the Premiership where only your mistakes make any headlines. My team have got silly weaknesses, but…well…so have I. I quite like it that way.

7th November 2000- New Division One, Watford 1 Sheffield Wednesday 3

Fast-improving Sheffield Wednesday brought Watford’s 15-game unbeaten start to the season to a grinding halt with a shock win at Vicarage Road.

It had to happen sooner or later, obviously.

18th March 2000- Premier League, Watford 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0

A late goal from Allan Smart gave Watford the points in this battle between the Premiership’s worst two sides.

It only takes a second to score a goal. It only takes a goal to win a game. It only takes a win to make my day….And it would only have taken a few more days like this to make a season.

It’s tempting to write only about the last ninety seconds of this game. Watford played beautifully, Smart scored early thanks to a splendid assist from star forward Tommy Smith, then we defended stoutly and resolutely for the arduous and seemingly endless remainder of the game, displaying the excellent teamwork that has often been lacking, etc., etc.

BSAD: If you want a battleplan for the rest of the season, this was it. We rolled our sleeves up and got on with it, concentrating only on the here and now. We were poor for periods and we made some costly mistakes…but, far more importantly, we were never distracted, never frustrated and never downhearted. That approach, if it can be sustained, is what will keep us up. We’ve got nothing to lose this season, so let others worry about relegation.

Just before half-time Gifton arrived, for a limping Wooter. After such a long time out it was a worry whether he’d be as good; but he is on this evidence – holding the ball up, beating players through sheer strength, still able to see and deliver the odd crucial pass. We cheered his every move like we used to do to Phillips.

14th January 1998- FA Cup Third Round Replay, Sheffield Wednesday 0 Watford 0 (After Extra Time, Sheffield Wednesday won 5-3 on penalties)

BSAD report: Was it worth it? Oh, yeah. Di Canio’s sending off, one of the most senseless and utterly dick-witted acts I’ve seen a footballer commit, was a comedy moment of epic proportions and well worth the journey. That we failed to overcome our recent failings to win the tie seems to matter a little less than it might’ve when we have that memory to take away from Hillsborough.

Arsenal won 4-3 on penalties
