Watford piled on the agony for Sunderland boss Howard Wilkinson as they dumped the Premiership strugglers out of the FA Cup at The Stadium of Light.

This was always going to be A Good Day. Irrespective of the result, a big cup tie away at a fine stadium against a Premiership club with a big travelling support guaranteed… and this allied with the assurance that this Watford side so very rarely lets you down when it comes to effort and application. All valid arguments in answering the “Why on earth do you do this?” question that many will have faced last week.

27th November 1999- Premier League, Watford 2 Sunderland 3

A late winner from midfielder Gavin McCann moved Sunderland back into the Premiership top three after lowly Watford threatened an upset in a controversial five-goal thriller at Vicarage Road.

The distance between where we want to be – and Sunderland spent most of the game sending us “WISH YOU WERE HERE” postcards – and where we actually are is huge and getting no smaller. There’s plenty of fight still, the need to overcome our limitations growing more urgent by the week. We’ve not going to give up, that much is clear. And, with things remaining tight as others continue to struggle just as badly, we’ve no reason to give up.

We were also honoured with Sir EJ’s first visit of the season. Just goes to show, folks, money can never buy you everything – not freedom nor the flexibility to spare the odd ninety minutes.

We started like we’d all known we needed to – and finally got the rewards that Coventry and bad refereeing had denied us in previous games. Ah, bad refereeing…but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

BBC Sport: England international Kevin Phillips scored twice to give Sunderland their first win of the season against fellow promoted team Watford.

BSAD: Again we finished a match more than matching the opposition and ending up with nothing. Sunderland had as much play as us, but the difference between the two teams was in the finishing. I’m worried already that this is going to be the story of our season. I agree with everything that GT has said about not wanting to waste money on players, but last night showed what we are missing. We work hard and create chances, but we need to finish them off. Against other teams, chances will be even harder to make, and the ones we do, we have to score.

24th September 1996- League Cup Second Round Second Leg, Sunderland 1 Watford 0 (Sunderland won 3-0 on aggregate)

This was the last time we played at Roker Park and the last time former Hornets goalkeeping legend Tony Coton would play against us. Less than a month later he broke his leg in six places in a game for Sunderland against Southampton which led to his retirement from playing.

BSAD: The game was pretty boring, not much happening. They scored quite early to really kill the tie stone dead, and the rest of the match was playing out for time, and trying to keep the score down to a reasonable level.

17th September 1996- League Cup Second Round First Leg, Watford 0 Sunderland 2

BSAD imageBSAD report:I thought the crowd was pretty poor for a Premier League team, even if it was only Sunderland and it was only the Second Round First Leg of the Coca-Cola League Cup.
