The same old story, over and over and over. The plodding inevitability of endless defeats, each new fixture bringing fresh optimism to be crushed. Minute shreds of hope, blown away in a Premiership hurricane.

We were parked at the top of the South stand, where they make you sit down in the back row so you don’t obscure the advertising boards, and tell you off for putting your feet on the seats in front of you. Oh yes, They Are Premier League.

So you stand and wait for kickoff in the vertigo-inducing upper tier of the air-conditioned aircraft hangar that is White Hart Lane. You look down at the Watford players warming up in the middle of an authentic media event – as incongruous as your mates appearing as extras in a Hollywood blockbuster, you half expect to see them waving excitedly to their mums whenever the cameras pass. The video screens play hysterical trailers for that same blockbuster – coming soon to a football ground near you….ANDY SINTON!!! – and the effect is nauseating. You reflect that the Premiership has absolutely no class.

BSAD report: Watford led another remarkable match three times and were always on the brink of opening up the crucial two-goal lead, at which point it felt like anything could happen. In many ways, that sense of anticipation made a mere 3-2 at White Hart Lane feel like something of an anticlimax. Had Ian Walker been sent off and Gary Porter not missed that first leg penalty, a comeback really would’ve been on the cards.

To set the scene : we’d made an unspectacular start to the season, and had just got beaten 4-2 at home by the old enemy, largely due to the absence of Foster, who was then vital to our defence, and Miller. These two players both missed the first leg. Tottenham, under Ossie Ardiles and Steve Perryman were the then media darlings (Chelsea, beware!) largely due to Klinsmann.

The attendance of 14,021 was the biggest of the season. The reason for such a large gate was down to Tottenham’s new signing Jurgen Klinsmann who made his first appearance for the club.
