Marko Arnautovic scored on his return from injury as West Ham boosted their survival hopes with a 2-0 win over Watford on Saturday.

Watford, who remain 11th, went close through Adrian Mariappa’s header and Gerard Deulofeu’s free-kick but Adrian was equal to both efforts.

Watford were uninspired. They displayed none of the brio that allowed them to crush Chelsea last week, with Gerard Deulofeu and Richarlison failing to find space on the flanks, and were fortunate when the lively Hernández had a goal ruled out by a tight offside decision in the 31st minute.

Watford had played considerably better in the second half but, while it could be said that the score was a little flattering to the hosts, some poor defending and equally poor finishing meant that it felt as though the Hornets didn’t deserve anything from the game.

David Moyes said he was disappointed with West Ham’s “big players with big reputations” after his first game in charge ended in a 2-0 defeat at Watford.

The appointment of David Moyes at West Ham failed to deliver an instant reaction as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Watford on Super Sunday.

If David Moyes had any illusions that keeping West Ham in the Premier Leaguewill not be among the biggest challenges of his career, then the manner of this defeat must surely act as a major wake-up call.

There was a Sunday afternoon feel about it all, to start with. A sort of simmering sleepiness. That lasted a matter of seconds, long enough for Andy Carroll to launch into his typical aggressive, aerial, flailing challenge and take out Marvin Zeegelaar, surprisingly given a debut in preference to Holebas. Welcome to the Premier League. Carroll avoided a card, somehow, perhaps by getting his assault in so early that if the “too early to book someone” line ever had any credibility to it he had to get away with it.

It is the 25^th anniversary of Watford’s Community and Education Trust and the club had chosen this game to celebrate. As part of the commemorations, they had invited Ann Swanson back as guest of honour. Ann had run the Junior Hornets back in the 80s and her efforts in ensuring that youngsters had a safe environment in which to watch football helped a whole generation of fans develop a love for the game, many of whom are now bringing the next generation along. While I am too old to have been part of this group, I did want to shake her hand and thank her for all that she had done. While waiting, it was lovely to hear her greet a guy with, “You’re one of my Junior Hornets.” She seemed thrilled, but the warmth of the young man’s greeting showed the great esteem in which she is held by her former charges.

Substitute Andre Ayew scored a second-half equaliser to earn West Ham a Premier League point against Watford.

Neither Watford nor West Ham are bad enough to get drawn into a relegation battle this season, but they are certainly not good enough to make any sort of push for Europe, either. It is not even March, but it is hard to avoid the feeling that mid-table obscurity beckons for both these sides in the coming months.

After a two week break, and notwithstanding a defeat at Old Trafford that was disappointing but far from humiliating, perspective on games like this has changed. The two wins against Arsenal and Burnley reversed the gentle downwards slide and we are now by general consensus a Mid Table Club… not that relegation is impossible, but we’d have to work pretty hard to achieve it.

As the half wound down, my gaze was drawn to the TV studio to our left where the pundits were having their hair and make-up done, the first time that I have seen beauty treatments in a football ground.

I’m happy to take a point from this game. West Ham were by far the better side but we continually played right into their hands with our ‘lump it up to Deeney and see what happens’ tactic.

Watford secured their second win in a row with victory over West Ham as Odion Ighalo continued his goalscoring form.

sky The hosts were worthy winners and although Ighalo’s first goal owed a debt of gratitude to a critical touch from Hammers defender Aaron Cresswell, his second was an excellent strike which ended the game as a contest early in the second half.

West Ham, the scourge of the nation’s most revered sides, proved themselves once again the punchbags of the newly promoted as they fell to a first away defeat of the season against a team who were better than them in the first half and, after Slaven Bilic made two substitutions at the interval, even more superior in the second.

Today, everything changed. Up to now we have been gently easing ourselves into the icy water, acclimatising. Quietly settling into our surroundings. Not today. Today we took a great ruddy running leap at it, and landed two-footed with a massive splash. West Ham were underneath us, and sunk without trace.

West Ham needed a late Ricardo Vaz Te goal to earn a point as they blew their chance to go top of the Championship. Teenager Sean Murray fired Watford ahead midway through the second half with a fierce low drive.

Substitute Vaz Te struck with three minutes of normal time to play and West Ham laid siege on the Watford goal throughout nine minutes of stoppage time following a nasty injury to Dale Bennett.

Sean Dyche’s Watford, by contrast, were fearless. Outclassed on paper, they defended heroically and “looked after each other”, as Dyche put it. Leaders stood tall all over the pitch. Captain John Eustace shed blood for the cause. Goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak, in his third game on loan from Manchester United, kept Watford in the game with some excellent saves. “We believe in what we do,” Dyche said. “We’re realistic, you know you’re in for a tough task at a place like this. But the mentality of the team is fantastic, and that was on show tonight.”

A clash of heads between John Eustace and Dale Bennett, Watford team-mates, forced a seven-minute delay. Eustace left the pitch, returning with a large bandage on his head, but Bennett, his neck in a brace, was taken off on a stretcher and then to hospital. “We suspect it’s not as serious as it looked,” Sean Dyche, the Watford manager, said. “We’re waiting on the doctors to see if he’ll be kept in overnight.”

Away matches are brilliant. Evening kick-offs are brilliant. Nothing-to-lose, dammit games are brilliant. So an evening kick off at the Boleyn Ground, preceded by several hours of build-up… verbal, nutritional (Nathan’s Pie and Mash shop a thing of rare beauty) and liquid is something to savour. Yet more so given that astonishingly sensible stewarding permits actual standing for the entire ninety minutes. That’ll never catch on. And of course that the Boleyn Ground is a claustrophobic, suffocatingly intense venue. Industrial-scale bubble machines of a size that would cause my daughters to combust with excitement are stationed at the side of the pitch, propelling countless swarms of the things into the night sky. I must have seen that here before, but I can’t believe it’s anything like as effective when the floodlights aren’t catching them. Not sure it would work quite as well with Hornets, one to mull over though. I’m sure there are financial reasons for leaving Upton Park, reasons that might even benefit the football club, but you’d have to be bloody mental to want to abandon this place. If the atmosphere is slightly subdued before the game, from kick off onwards it positively crackles.
