Bristol City’s resurgence continued as they came from 2-0 down to earn a point at Watford, thanks largely to an error from home keeper Scott Loach.

England Under-21 international goalkeeper Scott Loach let Adrian Mariappa’s back-pass slip under his foot and into the net to give the Robins an equaliser within 24 seconds of the second half on Tuesday night.

And all of that hard graft? All of those training ground hours, days, weeks spent on defending as a unit, with the excellent Jonathan Hogg ahead of the back four and the wide midfielders tucked into the space in front of the full-backs? All of the rigour and cohesion and structure that Dyche has tried to bring to the party? (Are those things you bring to a party? No matter…) Hard not to wonder whether it’s all been worthwhile when you concede two goals as gormless as these, throwing away three very handy points in the process.

First-half goals from Heidar Helguson and Martin Taylor gave Watford a deserved victory over Bristol City.

Five thunks from the first League win over City since Boxing Day 1998, Gifton at the corner flag and so forth. Yes, really.

Maynard struck from the corner of the six-yard box after 23 seconds and doubled his tally after Scott Loach parried a shot from Ivan Sproule.

Straight from the kick off their intentions were clear. No silly passing it back, or hoofing it out by the opponents corner flag. An instant attack resulted in a throw in. From it, they beat our offside trap and put the ball past Loach for 1-0. They continued the first half in the same manner and scored a second after Bromby failed to clear.

I’m almost glad they scored their fourth. Almost. Would have been too cruel to see City protect a one goal lead by jockying around in the corner to the cheers of their fans for five minutes. After all, it was ten years to the day since Gifton was doing precisely that to them, in the same corner of the pitch…

Substitute Darren Byfield’s injury-time goal saw Bristol City condemn leaders Watford to a third defeat in a week.

A whole lot better than Tuesday, for starters, but all the more frustrating that the result was the same – we didn’t half look brittle defensively throughout, however tidy some of our attacking play.

BBC: Lee Miller struck in extra-time to send Bristol City into the third round of the Carling Cup. Miller headed home Mickey Bell’s cross four minutes into the extra period to give Danny Wilson’s Second Division side victory in a dour game.

BSAD: The Lord of the Rings exhibition at the Science Museum kicks off imminently… this features one of Peter Jackson’s now famous distorted sets, which create the illusion of diminutive stature by abnormally scaling the environs to fool the camera. It’s not inconceivable that Jackson came upon this idea on a visit to the away end at Ashton Gate, from where it was impossible to assess the geography of play in the opposite half by any other means than a rough inferral from player sizes. Even this method wasn’t foolproof… “so was that Bruce Dyer on the edge of the box, or Ashley Young on the halfway line…?”
