The first game since Al Bangura won his appeal to be allowed to remain in the UK.

After 19 games record signing Nathan Ellington finally scored his first goal for the Hornets.

Nathan Ellington scored his first goal for the club since his summer move when he coolly steered home from 12 yards.

At the end of a busy week Aidy Boothroyd could reflect that more by luck than design his team had squeezed back into the automatic promotion places on goal difference but the Watford manager cannot wait for the month to end so he can get back to the business of priming his squad for the run-in.

Well that was quite good fun really. Wouldn’t have been fun in the Premiership… we’d have been two down and game over at half time.

I don’t know if it is football in general – the continuing failure of the National team, the increasingly hard to stomach Sky TV hype and equally nauseating commentary, Andy Gray (both of them), the wonky kick off times etc. – but (whisper it) I think I am losing interest a bit.

Darren Ambrose scored a dramatic late equaliser as Charlton recovered from two goals down to rescue a point. The Hornets led 2-0 at half-time after Hameur Bouazza finished from close range and Damien Francis powered in Tommy Smith’s cross.

From the neutral’s point of view a point apiece was an unsatisfactory outcome for these struggling teams. Both surely needed a victory to entertain serious hopes of avoiding the drop. Alan Pardew and Adrian Boothroyd, however, saw plenty of positives to come out of an absorbing and entertaining match.

In the first half Watford finally seemed ready to take flight, but again the fog descended. The clouds have rarely lifted from this corner of Hertfordshire of late, but the good news is that clouds in this division are lined not with silver but gold, and lots of it. Boothroyd will surely aim for the skies again next season and he should at least be able to afford some expensive ammunition.

A Francis Jeffers penalty and a Danny Murphy free-kick ensured victory for Charlton in a testimonial for Watford goalkeeper Alec Chamberlain.

BSAD report: Reading the souvenir programme once again impressed on me the wisdom of his signing, for a relative pittance, and how often his steadying presence has helped us.

BSAD: Really, it’s impossible to capture it without immediately referring to an insane performance from Paul Robinson, who spent most of the first half stomping around to mark his territory on the left flank before leaving his kingdom to seek fulfilment of his schoolboy dream of being a dashing, swashbuckling goalscorer.

Gianluca Vialli’s stated love for the League Cup, which he won in 1998 while player-manager at Chelsea, has seemed out of touch now that it is fashionable to devalue the competition, but last night his Watford team produced a performance to reinvigorate its romantic side.

BSAD: This was really dreadful stuff. Don’t let the half-time scoreline fool you into thinking that there was some sort of Charlton comeback in the second half. No siree. They were better than us from start to finish and deserved to win by a bigger margin. Only occasional heroics from Steve Cherry kept us in it, but once we were behind it was impossible to see where an equaliser was going to come from.
