16th August 2008- Championship, Watford 1 Charlton Athletic 0

BBC SportTommy Smith’s fierce strike gave Watford victory over 10-man Charlton.

BHappy imageNew passing game, new passing formation. Fine. But the real benefit thus far has been the protection afforded the defence. It speaks volumes that on a day when John Eustace was below par, Charlton rarely got more than a sniff – having Eustace and Williamson, fantastic today, as two sitting midfielders makes us a whole lot more secure. It does ask a lot of the four attacking players though (4-3-3 my arse). Speaking of whom….

11th May 2008- Championship Playoff Semi-Final First Leg, Watford 0 Hull City 2

I haven’t done the research but I think we must have set a record of being the only club to ever achieve our lowest league attendance of the season in the first leg of a playoff game.  We had attracted over 15,000 to every other league game in 07/08 but our terrible form of just one win in 14 games which saw us scrape into the playoffs meant only 14,713 turned up. In comparison 18,535 attended the first leg against Birmingham in 1999, the third highest home crowd of the 98/99 season.

BBC SportGoals from veteran pair Nicky Barmby and Dean Windass put Hull within sight of the Championship play-off final.  Watford had a goal harshly disallowed in the fourth minute and fell behind shortly after when Fraizer Campbell set up Barmby to sidefoot home.

skyTo make matters worse for Adrian Boothroyd’s men, skipper John Eustace was given a straight red card after a second-half scuffle.

BHappy image Yes, okay, so we lost.  And we can’t defend.  And, well, Dean Windass.  But that was rather fun wasn’t it?

19th April 2008- Championship, Watford 0 Crystal Palace 2

Two late goals saw Crystal Palace move to within a point of Watford and dent the hosts’ automatic promotion hopes.

More depressing than Barnsley, if anything.  No lack of effort this time, not really.  We probably edged the first half, and were much the better team at the start of the second.  And Palace still mugged us painfully easily.  This is what we were doing to teams two years ago, of course.

9th April 2008- Championship, Watford 0 Barnsley 3

Barnsley striker Kayode Odejayi put his FA Cup semi-final miss behind him to score twice at Watford and lift the Tykes out of the relegation places.

Watford missed out on the chance to leap to the top of the Championship and extended their recent run of form to one win in 10 after a desperate performance against struggling Barnsley, for whom a second away win of the season was enough to soothe any FA Cup hangover and send them surging out of the bottom three.

This week I’ve seen a house purchase fall through, spent any amount of time with a bored toddler in queues on the M1, and my tickly cough is back.   I really didn’t need last night’s gutless, passionless, utterly undistracting shower of shit.

They could have gone top and that was the best they could come up with.

5th April 2008- Championship, Watford 2 Coventry City 1

http://watford.fcdb.info?id=4806

Promotion-chasing Watford beat Coventry to claim their first win in nine games. Nathan Ellington put Watford ahead when he was allowed to run into the box unchallenged and drill the ball home.

Little more than three miles away Gordon Brown and 15 heads of state were sitting down at The Grove hotel trying to put the world to rights while an event of more significance in the minds of Watford fans was being played out on a difficult pitch. At the end of it all their team somehow came away on top.

We were, it was very clear, fully aware of how fortunate we’d been and how little we could afford to throw it away again. It has come to that: eleven men behind the ball to hang on grimly against a team in the bottom half. But if that’s what it takes….

15th March 2008- Championship, Watford 0 Stoke City 0

Darius Henderson failed to convert a penalty for the second time in a week as Watford played out a sixth consecutive draw.

The red card shown to the Watford captain, John Eustace, in the 22nd minute for a high tackle on Richard Cresswell appeared to be the right decision but, if the player is to believed, there was no malice intended and he was dismissed for a mere miscalculation of timing. It was particularly hard for Eustace to take as he was playing against his former side for the first time since he left the Britannia Stadium in January.

Full marks to the Stokies for their vocal disdain of Eustace’s dismissal, and to Don Fraser for his “come up here Styles and we’ll show you what contact is” shout of the day.

The two major incidents aside, Watford could, and perhaps should have won this game. The Stoke stats of zero shots on target and zero shots off-target tell their own story, and the increasing number of tantrums and hissy-fits from Ricardo Fuller tell you all you need to know about the performance of the Watford defence (or of course further evidence of his suspect temperament).
