Watford, under pressure to keep in contact with the top six, threw everything at a wall of blue shirts, with Andy Impey particularly to the fore in key situations.

The frustration here was that after a distinctly tentative opening ten minutes in which we might’ve shot ourselves in the foot before Leicester had the chance to do the job themselves, we turned to face our opponents and return their sneers and snarls with interest. We didn’t lose the battle, we just lost the game…and, perhaps, the result reflected the league positions fairly accurately in that respect. Somehow, Leicester have a ruthless, guiltless edge that we lack. Somehow, I’m not sure that I regret that at all.

Ah, the rituals of opening day; second-gearing on the motorway alongside caravans and cars with scarves hanging out of the windows, hope springing anew in every step of every fan wending their way to every ground. Neither ITV Digital nor a daily diet of summer scare stories can take that away.

The contrast with last season is striking, already. Whatever else went wrong yesterday, we were far more comfortable with the high tempo set by Leicester, and far less afraid of being seen to sweat and toil. We pressed hard, retrieving possession more quickly than before and occasionally forcing errors from a slightly sloppy Foxes defence. Notably, and despite a great deal of complaint about the lack of aerial threat from a lightweight attack, an eager midfield pounced on rebounds and clearances rather than allowing them to escape, thus enabling us to press forward without always retaining possession particularly well. It didn’t amount to much, perhaps. That doesn’t mean that it can’t amount to much, however.

All the Horns fans, some three thousand of them in a crowd of over 31,000 (ground capacity I’m told is 32,500) were in the north-east corner of the ground, with vociferous Leicester fans on either side – and Leicester fans occupied the areas behind both goals. Horns fans, not noted for their ability to make noise since our days in the Premiership, certainly out-sang our opponents until the goals arrived, but it’s hard creating an atmosphere from one corner of a stadium.

In an open, entertaining match Watford’s Allan Smart could have had a hat-trick in the space of four frantic first-half minutes – but each time he shot just too high or straight to Leicester goalkeeper Tim Flowers.

BSAD image This was not a classic, just a well-matched contest with plenty of incident. A healthy serving of good, wholesome footie. And we didn’t lose either.

“You-are-Nationwide”, they sang. Well, we’ll see. But if the Hornets do return whence we came come May, there are some things that I for one won’t miss. One of these is the hint of desperation with which clubs like Leicester (and Wednesday, two years ago) attempt to impress upon you that they are a big club, long-enough established in the top flight to call themselves “Premiership”. Wednesday are currently finding out that this illusion is a veneer that doesn’t take much scraping away; Leicester, too, is a club that will be all too easily sucked into the maelstrom should their current more than capable side break up.

All in all, this was a disappointing performance; the defence was under pressure all night because we could not threaten their goal, not even on the counter. We got what we deserved on the night, and were fortunate not to get a hiding.

When GT took over in February we were bottom of the table with just 25 points, 7 points from safety and 10 behind ‘them up the road’. Even though we got relegated it was still some achievement to have almost doubled our points total under GT, take it down to the final day and to finish higher than them.
