BSADIt’s hard to believe that there are already so many what-ifs and might-have-beens so early in the season. Of course, some of those what-ifs and might-have-beens continue to over-shadow events on the pitch, making our last two results seem trivial by comparison…and yet it’s also obvious that, while the shadows would still remain, a win or two would add some valuable, vital sunshine to the picture.

Pennant slotted Heidar Helguson through and the Icelandic striker coolly finished in the 80th minute.

Even allowing for our customary difficulties in turning possession into chances and chances into goals, it would be hard – and unnecessary – to imagine a more exhilarating display. From first to last, we did everything right, and then a little bit more. With the benefit of hindsight, that even includes the penalty miss, since an earlier goal would’ve left us with longer to defend the lead. It was a perfect afternoon, one of those when it all comes together at the same time.

As the two sets of fans passed each other on Occupation Road afterwards, they summed up the whole thing far better than I ever could. Watford supporters looked back upon the events of the last five minutes, threw hands up in demonstrative frustration, and wailed “Oh, if only Mooney had buried that header…”. Their West Brom counterparts also reflected on the same five minutes, looked to the sky in disbelief, and howled “Oh, if only Sneekes had taken that chance in injury time…”.

There have been more than a few incongruous sights on the Vicarage Road pitch in recent years. Harry and Harriet so-called Hornet, Devon White and rugby to name but three.
