Wolves salvaged a point with an injury-time goal by Kevin Cooper after Neil Cox had given Watford the lead.

Bad luck tends to follow swiftly on the heels of manager-of-the-month awards. For Ray Lewington, a home draw against the might of an ever-improving Wolves side may have felt like a defeat but third place in the First Division should be sufficient consolation.

Here, everything that we’ve achieved so far was to be tested. For the first time since our unbeaten start to the 2000/01 season, we were defending a place in the top six against one of the First Division heavyweights, in form and ready to take us down a peg or three. This was something different, a new challenge.

Watching this game was a reward for ministering to my two sick children while they emitted green and yellow fluids and solids from both ends, for the past two days. Frankly, if we’d been playing Norwich, I don’t think I could have stomached it. But allowed out by my wife, at the possible expense of an Arsenal ticket in a couple of weeks, I hoped against hope that the Charlton spirit would see us right against a team everyone knows are unlikely to finish as low as seventh yet again.

Icelandic international Heidar Helguson kept Watford’s First Division play-off hopes alive with a last-gasp winner against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

So, this thoroughly bizarre, nonsensical football match. Such an oddity, in fact, that no reaction – laughter, tears, fainting, boredom, rejoicing, blind fury – would’ve been entirely inappropriate. Appropriately, then, it received the most inappropriate reaction of all…a standing ovation.

It was always going to be a strange night from the moment Robert Page almost slid the ball into his own net within seconds from kick-off with an ugly lunge trying to defend a cross.

BSAD: Don’t be fooled by the times of the goals. Really, this wasn’t a game of two halves at all – Wolves dominated for long periods before the interval and the half-time score flattered our overall performance, if not our decisive finishing. Even so, the comeback was thoroughly disappointing. Having taken the lead, we showed a disturbing lack of resilience in letting it slip.

BSAD: Maybe expectations are too high, certainly nicking a point at Wolves would have been a great result a couple of years ago. But I have been thinking that too much lately and it is a touch depressing that our fleeting moments of fluency are enough to get us by, along with an uncharacteristic amount of luck, in what is a characteristically poor First Division.

BSAD: It was a bit of a dour struggle but the finishing from both sides was not the best. We stuck to our guns and managed to smother Wolves in defence, only the slippery and skilful Keane looking as if he could cause us problems.

BSAD report: The first weeks of the season have offered a microcosm of Division One. The majority, including the sides we’ve already beaten, are charitable enough both in missing and donating chances that we have nothing to fear. Then there are the serious contenders – the teams that punish errors, the teams that have dealt with us comfortably.
